Stone chips, branches, rock edges, a tip-over in the field, or worse – a crash – the thin-walled valve covers of the 1300 ShiftCam Boxer can be quickly damaged, even when the original engine protection bar with the original filler panel is installed. Scratches are the least of the worries. With the ShiftCam engines, it is important to remember that the design of the ShiftCam valve train is extremely complex, and it makes sense to protect the cylinder head preventively. Since the exposed valve covers are only friction-locked, there is a risk that they may shift relative to the cylinder head under any impact, potentially damaging the complex valve train. Therefore, additional protection for the cylinder head is critical, especially under tough conditions, as the ShiftCam cylinder heads are among the most expensive components.

Therefore, our design brief required that the Wunderlich cylinder head protector be solidly dimensioned and particularly robust to reduce the risk of damage to the cylinder heads. Our reinforced version replaces the original filler panel and is simply mounted at the mounting points of the original engine protection bar. Together, this provides additional structural stability.

The straightforward protection system installation, made from high-quality aluminum alloy, is therefore directly and easily accessible on the original engine protection bar. Four millimeters component thickness, the form-fitting, immovable attachment, the solid screw connections – these are convincing features of a robust and durable design akin to a protective shield. The distinctive cut-outs serve for ventilation, and their characteristic, dynamically tapering shape fits seamlessly into the concept. All this combined creates a well-thought-out and comprehensive protection concept for the sensitive cylinder heads. We manufacture the cylinder head protector in a black anodized or natural aluminum finish.
