In our little world of Airhead Anarchists E.P.A. stands for "Exhaust Plumbing Alternative."
Back at the end of 1970s, when disco was finally giving up its grip on the addled minds of a pampered generation and punk was becoming a force of its own, the engineers at BMW had other things on their mind: keeping the airhead twin compliant with new stricter clean air regulations. Their emission reducing solution, which we always thought seemed rather like a Rube Goldberg design, involved a tangle of little pipes and hoses between the cylinder heads and the airbox, and a rubber hose connecting the vacuum ports on the bottom of the carburetors.
While some DOT and EPA bureaucrats may have been fooled by this cobbled together mess (or maybe they were quietly offered ski and spa vacations in the Alps if they'd look the other way), the cynical yet highly trained moto-tech guys at Bob's could see it for what it really was: a bunch of bollocks - stifling the bike's performance while doing practically nothing to reduce emissions.
The answer? Do AWAY with it! But then that left the little problem of what to do about the nasty holes and open ports left behind. That's why we made the "E.P.A. Kit!"
The kit includes:
• Two threaded plugs with two crush gaskets for the cylinder heads. (Please use Loctite-RED - not included - when assembling these so they NEVER come out.)
• Two timing hole rubber plugs for the holes in the air box (You'll also need a dab of sealant glue for those - not included)
• Two small screws with two fiber gaskets for the vacuum ports on the carburetors.
Done. Easy. And no more of that annoying popping sound from your exhaust.
