This classic “Oilhead” R1100 RT was ridden to Bob’s by its previous owner to trade for a newer bike. It runs remarkably well for its age and miles and appears to have been thoughtfully maintained throughout its years. There’s a little work to do on it, obviously, but that’s what makes it a Project Bike. For the resourceful rider who enjoys doing some light maintenance in exchange for getting a super deal on a great motorcycle with so much potential, this one will be irresistible. We know it has MANY YEARS & MILES left to give to its lucky new owner.

The EXTRAS installed — both Factory Options and Aftermarket:
• Color-matched BMW System Side Cases
• Color-matched BMW 33 liter Top Case with integrated passenger backrest
• HELD front and rear Protection Bars
• LED Auxiliary Driving Lights – TWO sets!
• Handlebar Risers – gives about 2” difference, up and back
• Black Safety-Reflective adhesive panels on side cases
• Throttlemeister passive cruise control (adjustable throttle lock)
• BMW Vale Cover Guards

The POSITIVES — the features that give you a big head-start on restoring this Project Bike to optimal performance and fun:
• The bike starts, runs, and rides well without issues! Big PLUS!
• ABS, clutch, and transmission all perform as they should.
• Lighting has been upgraded to LED, and it all works fine.
• Öhlins Suspension installed front & rear – a significant upgrade! (We noted that these shocks appear to be a bit shorter than standard, most likely intended as a “low suspension” modification to suit the previous owner.)
• All brake pads are practically new.
• The instrumentation (speedo, tachometer, etc.) functions properly.
• Brake hoses have been upgraded to stainless steel.
• An upgraded cam chain tensioner has also been recently installed.
• A new silicone wire unit was installed to replace the original Hall sensor (part of electronic ignition timing).

The CHALLENGES — this is the Project Bike maintenance that should be done sooner rather than later to assure safe and reliable performance:
• The oil sight glass is leaking. Replacement advised.
• The kill switch (on the right-side handlebar controls) is failing intermittently. If touched the wrong way, it will either kill the engine or prevent it from starting. Replacement advised.
• Front shock has a slight oil leak. Not an urgent issue but will need to be addressed in due course.
• All three brake rotors are very close to their wear limit and will need to be replaced soon.
• The tires, while still having about 80% of usable tread left, do not match. They are legally safe to operate, but handling and performance would be improved with properly matching tires.

The COSMETIC outlook:
There is no startling damage or glaring ugliness here. In fact, stand back a few paces and, gee, it looks pretty nice — better than average for a Project Bike! But of course, that’s not how you will be looking at it most of the time. Get in a little closer and you can’t miss the signs of its age and use — typical wear and tear such as tip-over scratches, highway chips, and sun fade, most of which would be greatly improved with a deep cleaning and finish restoration (detailing). However, there are a few blemishes that may remain persistently visible even after your detailing work. There is staining and corrosion on the exhaust, some paint chips and deeper scratches here and there, including one particularly long scratch on the left-front of the fairing. There is also a small structural crack in the fairing that we want to mention because you otherwise might not notice. It’s at the bottom of the slender piece that divides the radiator’s air intake port beneath the headlight. Our techs tell us that this crack has no significant effect on the overall strength and integrity of the fairing. This, and a few of its other cosmetic flaws, are what some of us like to call “badges of experience.” Perhaps you will tolerate them without shame, or even wear them proudly. We’ve all done it — we know you can too!

As with all PROJECT BIKES we want buyers to know as much as possible about the bike before making a purchase. We’ve nothing to hide and our only goal is that each new owner feels they paid fairly and got good VALUE. We encourage you to call, schedule a time to meet with one of our sales advisors, and inspect the machine in person to fully understand all the positives as well as the potential downsides involved in the refurbishing process.
