FOR SALE: American Flag R1100S

How would you like to own an ultra-rare R1100S, custom painted by BMW Motorrad USA — in a distinctive paint job that only THREE other BMWs ever received? Here’s your chance. But there’s much more here than just eye-catching colors. The bike is equipped with a full REMUS exhaust system among several other nice features (see below), and it’s still a baby with only about 2,500 miles on it. It has just been completely serviced at Bob’s, professionally detailed, and stands now in absolutely EXCELLENT condition, mechanically and cosmetically, ready to meet its next owner. You won’t be surprised to learn that there’s an interesting story behind this bike. But before we tell that story, we’d ask you to consider pausing long enough to call our sales team NOW at 1-888-269-2627 to schedule a time to personally inspect this bike before someone else rides it away!

Bob does not eat his words too often, but in this case he’s going to do so. Here’s the story: When Bob acquired his very rare 2003 R1100S Flag bike from BMW about 16 years ago (with only 11 miles on it at the time of purchase), he was told that, in total, only three bikes were painted in this special way at BMW’s in-house body & paint shop at their main facility in New Jersey. (It is quite the operation; they do special work on BMW cars there too, antiques to modern, and have some seriously talented staff and no shortage of the latest technology or materials.) Then, lo and behold, this example — a fourth Flag Bike — turned up! After Bob first heard of this bike there were several phone conversations where Bob said he was “likely not interested at all” due to his knowledge of the condition of other two Flag Bikes. He’d passed on acquiring those at around the time he got the one he still owns. That one is displayed in the Vintage BMW Motorcycle Museum and gets exercised on several very special holidays each year.

Those other two Red/White/Blue Flag-painted R1100S’s made the rounds across the country on the International Motorcycle Show circuit for two full seasons, visited numerous dealerships as a part of the factory demo truck program, got loaded, unloaded and tied down probably a hundred times and were sat on and handled by thousands of corporate staff and consumers. During that less-than-ideal process, the bikes acquired many noticeable nicks, dings, scrapes, scratches, and heart-breaking hardware and driveline coating deterioration to their once beautiful cosmetics. It was too much damage to fix. Bob was sure an entire, costly refinishing job would be necessary – simple touch-up and blend was never an option.

It took Bob a few days to research the previously unknown history of this newly surfaced fourth bike. He had this very nice, original BMW paint machine in front of him, along with the original documents showing who had likely made the special request and purchase after seeing the first Flag Bike that was showcased at the Daytona Races. Where it came from, what it was likely used for, how it ended up in this customer’s possession, and then how it eventually was offered to Bob’s is still a surprise that causes Bob to scratch his head.

A BMW dealer who was the largest new unit selling operator in the US at the time was likely able to arm twist BMW management to quietly fulfill what might have qualified as a personal purchase request. Bob will assure you he does not know of this ever happening since his time in the business aside from this request.

An independent BMW dealer group he was in for many years tried to get BMW to custom paint almost 200 same model machines (think extra guaranteed sales) and was turned away not once but twice. As he owns another rare one-of-a-kind colored R50/2 from the 1960’s, Bob has additional proof that this does in fact happen on very rare occasions, and is still working to get the complete story on that one having acquired it about two years ago.

He has confirmed that this truly is the previously unknown fourth bike painted in this head turning, patriotic red, white and blue with stars flag scheme with the work done by BMW’s own staff; it is the real deal. And yes, Bob knows that it could potentially lower the value of his own example, but probably not by much, as at the time, of the three painted by BMW, the one he acquired after the first two were sold at a closed dealer auction in Pennsylvania which he attended, was the only exceptionally clean real survivor.

Again, this one showed up and blew the “only 3 bikes story” from BMW out of the water. But we happily purchased it, even knowing it was due for a full service, complete body panel alignment due to a prior service where the technician clearly had not worked on an R1100S before, and some other needed light work. Though our Service Department was too busy to attend to its service needs until a few weeks ago, we definitely wanted to give this rare, low miles machine a most thorough service checkup before offering it for sale.

So now it’s ready. We’ve performed all the service required to make this offering fully up to date, including a biannual service, new alternator belt, all fluids, spark plugs, new grips, new Michelin tires filled with Nitrogen and new valve stems, a new license plate carrier, new rear red reflectors and not one but two official extended test rides plus a few more miles for good measure allowing us to log 119 miles on this stunning and rare machine before having it washed and professionally detailed in-house.

It is now ready for purchase and it needs nothing but a new owner ready to share a unique piece of BMW lore attached to one of the most rideable sport/sport-touring machines BMW ever designed and built. As expected, once we completed our diligence, it easily passed the stringent Maryland Safety Inspection (MSI) and a printed report is included in the purchase.

It was, like the other three, built around standard height (low bars and screens) R1100S prep model most of which originally left Berlin in Titan Silver paint code 764 and were built without ABS brakes. All the prep and the amazing red, white and blue American Flag paint work was performed by BMW experts in New Jersey at their body and paint shop so it does not shown up on any invoices or other documentation that Bob or other dealers have ever seen.

However, at the initial closed dealer auction where Bob passed on the first two machines to be offered, badly blemished that they were, BMW staff did disclose that they spent close to $5,400 per bike on the custom paint work and were quite dismayed at the damage the two bikes being auctioned off that day looked like.

It was roughly six months later when the third bike, which had been on display if not almost hidden in the corporate offices, became available. Upon notification of this unveiling and release, Bob did not delay in purchasing it even though, like this exquisite and head turning example, it does have a few very minor paint blemishes. These can be seen in the collective images being shared but are hard to see being so small and can be more easily pointed out during a personal on-site inspection.

It starts, idles, runs, shifts through the gears, handles and stops like new – it only has 2,500 original miles so that’s to be expected. All hardware, fittings, rubber, the seat, grips, switches, levers, pedals, exhaust components, plastic trim, and pretty much anything you can see and touch is in superb condition from a cosmetic and functional point of view with the exception of those very few tiny cosmetic blemishes we will show you when you make an appointment to inspect it and if serious about owning it, signing up for a demonstration ride before actually becoming the next owner.

As stated at the beginning, this exceptional R1100S was just fully serviced here at Bob’s and performs impeccably – despite it being an almost 20-year-young bike. (It was built in Germany in June, 2002) This amazing BMW motorcycle also comes with the full REMUS exhaust system, factory 4-way emergency flashers, carbon-fiber factory valve cover protectors with alloy skid plates, clear low stock windscreen, low BMW handlebars, full belly pan, adjustable factory suspension front and rear, removable rear passenger seat cowling, factory tool kit (hidden under the seat), original owner’s manual and two keys.
